This tiny integrated device provides a one-component solution for switching inductive loads such as relays, magnetically switched incandescent lamps, and small DC motors without the need for freewheeling diodes. It accepts logic-level inputs, so it can be driven by a variety of devices, including logic gates, inverters, and microcontrollers.

The NCP1396 A/B provides everything needed to build a reliable and robust resonant mode power supply. Its unique architecture includes a 500 kHz voltage controlled oscillator with a control mode that allows flexibility when an OR function is required, such as in multiple feedback path implementations. Thanks to its proprietary high-voltage technology, the controller is suitable for use in half-bridge applications with a bootstrap MOSFET driver, accepting large voltages up to 600 V. Multiple reaction-time protection features such as immediate shutdown or timer-based events, under-voltage, disconnected optocoupler detection, etc., contribute to safer converter designs without increasing circuit complexity. The adjustable dead time is also beneficial to reduce the breakdown current and increase the switching frequency.
